How to Work at Lionbridge and Appen For a Long Time and Not Get Fired?

Interested to Work at Lionbridge or Appen? These are both typical crowd sourcing companies; this type of business supposes that the main communication is done via email, and raters are responsible for self-education and providing high quality service.

Based on my personal experience both companies treat their freelancers well. Although it is true that you can find stories online of freelancers complaining they were fired without cause or notification. But this just isn’t true. My own experience proves that if you provide good quality service/work and meet your contract requirements, your contract will end up being renewed. Contracts usually run on a 6 month basis and I have had mine renewed for several years now.

If you really want to know what happens then read ahead.  I have compiled a list the of most common reasons for these companies terminating a contract with raters/independent agents:

Delivering unacceptable level of quality of rating service

Multiple substandard quality scores might lead to non-prolongation or termination of your contract (in case of receiving an unacceptable quality score). In most cases a vendor will give you a few chances to improve your quality, but your access to tasks will be restricted. If you want to know what to do if you are restricted for quality read here:

Common Issues of New Raters: Appen Yukon and Lionbridge Internet Safety Evaluator Google Rating Projects

Violating terms of contract regarding multiple accounts including IP/Network sharing and using public networks for work

It is prohibited to have multiple accounts with Appen and Lionbridge. These companies can find duplicate accounts very fast, and as a result, you will lose both accounts. The good news is that you can combine work at Lionbridge and Appen.

While working as a search engine evaluator, make sure that you have your personal unique IP address and no one uses the same IP to go online and work on for these companies. If you have two or more people in your household, it is advised to get two unique IP addresses, and you can do this for an extra charge with most internet service providers.

Non-completion of a minimum required number of tasks or hours or exceeding allowed work hours

This issue is very common among new Appen and Lionbridge raters and may lead to termination of your contract. This mostly happens when new agents show no activity in the first month of their service. In particular this can also happen if new agents enter the project in the second half of month, and for whatever reasons, they did not complete a minimum required number of tasks. In order to avoid this issue, make sure to show the minimum required activity in the system as per your contract.

Working on rating project from abroad

According to the contract you can’t work from abroad. The reason for this is that your contract states the location in which you would work. If you are rating websites in the USA market, you must reside in that market to give accurate data and results. If you work outside of your contracted location, you are breaking the contract. If you do happen to go abroad, make sure you do not complete any tasks on raterhub otherwise your contract will be terminated.

Duplicating/coping/sharing comments from/with other raters

You should not copy and share your comments with other raters, as an automatic system can easily detect duplication, and as a result, your account might be terminated for sharing materials with other raters.

  1. hello i applied for leapforce four months ago their is no response for them please guide me how to prepare resume and how to apply leapforce using another account tia.

    1. I highly doubt they care about resume. I actually don’t know why they should care and just wrote my name and last name. They answered in 2 days.

  2. Dear Tim,
First of all thanks for this very useful page.
I recently started to work for Leapforce – Nile Project.
I have a question regarding point n.4 – When you talk about going abroad you mean moving to leave permanently in another country and not going 1 week or 2 on holydays, right? I have to work at least 5 days per week as Nile agent and obviously i should keep on working using my mobile also if i go 1 week on holydays in Spain for example, in order to respect the 5days per week policy. thanks

    1. Hello, I think you should consult on this issue with your vendor. As far as I know Appen and Leapforce allow raters to take up to 14 days off within a 6 months period…

  3. Hey, I accidentally completed some tasks (about 20 mins) (working for Appen Atztec Ads) while abroad…I know this is not permietted (as per contract), but do they really track this and will it inevitably lead to the termination of my contract? Can I do something?

    Thanks

  4. Hey I forgot my rating email account password and now I cannot recover it, will LB change my email address or removes me from the program?

      1. Your account will be removed from the rating program due to inactivity.

  5. Hi tim, you say that Leapforce does not end the contract to its workers for no reason and I instead tell you that it does, because I was renewed the contract 3 times (the contract is 6 months each time) and I worked on Nile for 15 months (and this means that I worked well (the nile project lasts for a maximum of 15/16 months) because if I had worked badly they would have made me finish sooner and also because I never received messages that I worked badly, and I worked one hour a day every day continuously. After there were no other projects for me, I had qualified for another (without exams, I was waiting for them to call me) and instead after a few days I finished the project Nile I they had all the documents for the change for the entry of Appen and also for the payment of Payoneer and suddenly I get the email that says: your contract with Leapforce ends here and will not be renewed and I heard that this treatment is was also reserved for other people. Do you think I could reapply? Or once they tell you your contract ends here and it will not be renewed, it means that even if I ask the question I will not be accepted any more because I had already worked? Could I have the chance to go back to Leapforce and I had a great time working there?

  6. Dear Tim,

I am currently working for social media evaluator (Instagram) @ Lionbridge.
Just recently, i got a job offer from Appen for Falcon Post Tagging project (Facebook).
I’d like to know whether it’s okay if i work for both projects at the same time?
    Thank you

  7. Hello,
my contract in the Yukon Project will end in May. Do you happen to know around what time I will get the notice that my contract will get renewed or end?

  8. Hi, thank you for time and effort you put on this blog. I just have few questions if it’s possible to get an answer. I’m from Italy and I used to work for LB in past. After first contract exiperd I’ve got another one but I wasn’t able to do minimum hours required and they let me go which is fine, I ‘m ok with that. Problem is that after this failure on LB I just couldn’t get another job there. I applied many times but on exam date I got messages saying unsuccessful applications. Is it possible they blacklisted me? And is there any way to get around this problem? Second question., I applied for a short appen project and they said I passed only thing needed to be done is final paperwork. So how long does it take to get approved? Thank you very much and keep doing great work by adding info to your blog.

    1. Hello,

UNABLE TO ENTER IP ADDRESS INTO THE LIONBRIDGE EXAM/UNSUCCESSFUL APPLICATION. WHAT ARE THE REASONS?

Some candidates receive from Lionbridge email saying that “we were unable to enter you into our Online exam. According to our checks it appears that you have the same IP Address as another person in our system”.

It can be possible that the vendor was unable to enter your IP into exam because you have dynamic IP address. It might be very risky to have this type of IP address because it means that many people have the same shared IP address. Some internet service providers put a group of customers on the same IP address behind a NAT. This could be a problem and may lead to getting flagged for multiple accounts being used on the same platform such as raterhub.

  9. Hello, my application got rejected from Lionbridge right away because I put down that I worked for ZeroChaos and Appen. I’m in California. Even if I use a different email account to apply for Lionbridge, what am I supposed to put down in my resume for the entire time that I worked for both of those companies in order to not get rejected by Lionbridge?
